Newton win close game in Taunton

Newton, sponsored by Battens Charitable Trust arrived at Taunton Vale fired up and ready for what we knew would be one of our toughest games yet.

Despite a fairly new squad combination we started the first quarter strong, Sash and Carla had quickly gelled in defence and as a result were able to crowd the end third, turn over the ball and bring it out of their end to create scoring opportunities for the rest of the team.

Thanks to Amelia's quick decisions and runs in the middle, our centre passes through to goal were slick, meaning we could focus on turnovers on our opposition's centre passes and responding to changes in possession. We finished the first quarter 14-6.

After making some changes to their squad; Claremont came back at us in the second quarter, eager to get back in to the game. They were clinical through the centre court which made it more difficult for us to play our quick passing game. We kept our cool and worked hard for each other to keep the lead, Steph and Amelia increased the pressure through the centre court creating unforced errors for our opposition and reacting quickly to any turnovers. Claremont won the second quarter but we managed to retain our lead, the half time score was 26-20 to Newton.

After some rousing half-time speeches (and jelly babies...) we went into the third quarter with our usual fighting spirit. Katie had told us first thing we were winning the game and that we had to do! We saw Mel go in to WD and Steph coming in to C; this enabled us to shut down their "play maker" centre making the most of Stephs fitness with lots of pressure through the court. Some fantastic tips and interceptions from Mel meant that we were shutting down our oppositions play much earlier and getting the ball to our attacking third where Katie and Katie were simply exceptional in their decision making, timing and shooting against some strong defenders. The third quarter ended 39-29.

The last quarter again was tough, Claremont still had the fitness and spirit to win this and came out ready to do just that. We kept up our work rate, keeping possession and scoring from our centres. The gap between us began to close but despite the pressure the whole squad continued to put in the effort, stayed calm and responded well to each other. A really fantastic squad effort against some tough opposition meant that we took the win, the final score 48-42. The Newton unbeaten run continues, 9 games and 9 wins!

Oppositions player: Katie H

Players player: Sash

Well done to Katie G who had two quarters during the game with 100% scoring stats. That is quite the record!

The whole of the Newton squad would like to wish everyone at YNC and involved in Somerset Netball a very Merry Chrisrmas and a Happy New Year!

Wyndham, sponsored by Rotork travelled to Street this week to play Abbey. With a new squad the girls took to the court with positivity and worked hard throughout the game. The defence turned over lots of ball throughout, with a special mention to Tonia and Lucy who battled hard against tall and accurate shooters. In attack the girls showed real patience and worked the ball in to Sam and Jo for a steady shot.

Although the result didnít go their way, Wyndham enjoyed their last game before a well deserved Christmas break.
