Pond House Yard mourning loss of Chester Barnes

David Pipes stables at Nicholashayne is mourning the sad loss of Chester Barnes, who died suddenly last week at the age of 74.

Barnes enjoyed huge success in table tennis and was a former English champion before going onto become a key part in Martin Pipe’s long and highly successful jump’s training career. He was assistant during Pipe’s 15 title-winning seasons – the first in 1988-89, the last in 2004-05.

During his time at the yard Barnes helped to saddle up the horses at the races, travelling with Martin up and down the country and helping to plot countless winners, whilst until recently he was the daily blogger for David on his website.

David Pipe said: “The death of Chester Barnes was a big shock to us all at the yard. When Dad was doing so well Chester was part of that era and a lot of people in racing have sent us their condolences and his death is a sad loss to everyone especially his wife Jane and son Lester.”
