David Pipe reflects on Cheltenham 2021

David Pipe is back at Pond House Yard after the four day Cheltenham Festival, where the highlight of his entries came with Adagio, owned by locally based Brocade Racing and ridden by Tom Scudamore who came second in the Triumph Hurdle at 10-1.

Reflecting on his Cheltenham horses Pipe said: “ Adagio went well and ran a tremendous race, so hopefully there is a lot to look forward to with him in the future.

“All of the others ran decent races, although probably the ground wasn’t soft enough for a few of them but we are happy.”

How was the Festival without the huge crowds to cheer the action?]

“It was very different without any crowds but we were just grateful to be racing and we are very much looking forward to being back there next year.

“There wasn’t too much to get excited about because the Irish were winning everything!”

Pipe went on: “The success of the Irish hasn’t happened overnight, they have been getting stronger and their economy is better than ours and a lot of the Irish horses are now trained in Ireland. Back in 2012 there were 22 winners trained in Great Britain and only five in Ireland, so it goes in eras.

“Prize money is one factor, because in Ireland it is better and a lot of owners are having horses in Ireland and in France as well.”

One of the stand out stories of the week was the success of Irish jockey Rachael Blackmore, who ended as the leading rider at The Festival with six winners. One of Blackmore’s winners was Quilixios who beat Adagio ridden by Tom Scudamore in the JCB Triumoh Hurdle?

“She was amazing last week, She keeps it all very straight forward and has got a good racing brain and it was a tremendous performance that’s good for her and for racing in general.”

Looking ahead to the remainder of this season Pipe said: “Hopefully we will be notching up some more winners this season and then its about regrouping, trying to strengthen the squad in the summer before it all starts again.”
