Mixed fortunes for Pipe over the weekend

DAVID Pipe enjoyed very mixed fortunes over last weekend. The Nicholashayne handler enjoyed a double on Friday, the first of Sandown’s two day meeting.

The first winner was in the opener when Gericault Roque came in at 3-1, which was followed up when Sexy Lot took the last at 4-1.

Both horses were ridden by conditional jockey Fergus Gillard and gave the 18 year old his first ever double.

Gillard is continuing to enjoy a great season and ahead of the start of the Cheltenham Festival he had notched up a total of 20 winners.

On Saturday, the second day of the Sandown fixture it was a very different story.

Pipe’s runners were prepared and loaded into the horse box and set off in plenty of time for the 150 plus mile journey to Sandown Park which is situated close to Esher south west of London.

However unfortunately for Pipe an articulated lorry overturned on the northbound M5 between Wellington and Taunton at approx. 7.15 am which resulted in his horsebox being trapped in the following traffic.

Just after 11am on Saturday the trainer posted on twitter that his horsebox had been at a standstill for over four hours and his horses were not going to make it to Sandown and had been withdrawn.

Just before one o’clock Pipe reported that the horsebox was on the move, all the horses were fine and heading back to Pond House.

No doubt Pipe will be keeping his fingers crossed for a clear run each day to this week’s Cheltenham Festival.
