Taunton Vivary beat Bridgwater Jupiter in Regional Netball league


VIVARY sponsored by Shine Hair Management, played Bridgwater’s Jupiter in Regional League 3 winning 66-28.

Vivary had a solid opening winning the first quarter 14-10. Vivary maintained their good start and put pressure on Jupiter throughout the court forcing many turnovers and winning interceptions. Series of excellent team play from defence right the way down to the shooters saw Vivary extend their lead to 32-17. Going into the final quarter the hosts were 47-24 up. With good use of squad rotation, Vivary eventually enjoyed a comfortable win. POM was Meg Palmer, OPOM was Lauren Knight.

The squad: Lauren Wilkinson, Nicole Smith, Emily Tong, Lauren Knight, Meg Palmer, Susie Marsh, Faye Symons, Amelia Watson, Mya Hounsell.

Tone, sponsored by The Kings Arms, played Stanchester’s Sharks in the premier division winning 62-44.

Tone had a fantastic first quarter with safe and strong passes all the way down the court and good control of the ball, giving them a lead of 17-6. Sharks fought back in the second quarter and began to close the gap but Tone remained focused, picking up loose balls and plenty of turnovers from the defence (32-18). In the third quarter, Tone had great passing in and around the circle to the shooters with great defence and marking every single ball (43-30). Tone remained strong in the final quarter with great man-on-man marking in defence leading to more turnovers giving Tone another great win. POM was Jade Barnett, OPOM was Fee Grammer.

Monmouth, sponsored by Wilkie May and Tuckwood, played Tor’s Abbey in the premier division losing 34-44.

Monmouth went into this game knowing it was going to be difficult against an experienced team. The first quarter started with Monmouth taking control of the game, leading 12-7 at the end of the first quarter through accurate shooting and excellent defence. However by the second quarter, Abbey had begun to regain composure and steadily advanced, resulting in them gaining a two-goal lead by half time. Abbey’s tall and skilled defence proved challenging for Monmouth’s attack and, although Monmouth kept fighting, Abbey were out for the win. Monmouth trailed by four goals going into an exciting third quarter during which they equalised but fell behind once again. The last quarter saw Monmouth still fighting for a win but unfortunately the score line did not reflect the great play on court. POM was Maisie Reynolds.

Quantock, sponsored by Mecca Bingo, played Tor’s Avalon in the first division losing 25-44. POM was Tina Follett.

Priory, sponsored by Matt Durbin Associates, played Walton in the second division losing 47-48.

The game started smoothly with Priory leading 14-13. In the second quarter Priory played well to extend their lead (30-19). At half time everyone was very positive and ready for the third quarter where the team were energetic. Walton had rethought their tactics and pulled a few goals back (40-31). In the final quarter Walton fought hard and by scoring a goal in the last minute, secured their narrow win. POMs were Sophie Bond and Denise Evely, OPOM was Zoe Stacey.

The squad: Zoe Stacey, Sophie Bond, Andrea Dobson, Lauren Knight, Sarah Hughes, Gugu Mlotshwa, Denise Evely, Ellie Tolman.

Blackdown, sponsored by Mortgage Select, played Wells’ Canons in the second division winning 72-19. It was a wet and windy match but Blackdown didn’t let the weather get the better of them, displaying a strong first quarter leading 17-7. The attack continued to have another strong quarter with Lucy Cox quickly finding her feet at GA with some brilliant feeds into Becca at GS who was holding her space perfectly (36-13). The next quarter saw the defence coming out strong only allowing Canons to score two goals. Ali made many interceptions at GD whilst GK Rhonda kept Canons’ GS out of the game (55-15). Blackdown continued to fight for every ball in the final quarter with the centre court working well to bring the ball down to the shooters. POM was Rhonda Robins, OPOM was Tina Follett.

Tudor, sponsored by Marked Skin, played Tor’s Chalice in the third division losing 28-48.

Tudor had a tough first quarter trailing 4-15. However by the second quarter Tudor doubled their score and more interceptions were made and the defence challenged for turnovers, ending the second quarter 10-26. After a jelly baby sugar rush at half time, Tudor took to the court still trying their hardest to catch up but errors left them trailing 18-39. Tired and sweaty, they continued to push on and earned a well deserved point for half of Chalice’s score. POM was Libby Binding.

The squad: Tanya Binding, Becky Lucas, Ellie Murray, Maddy Russell, Ally Gabell, Charlotte O’Leary, Libby Binding, Kate Hine, Hayley Milne, Lauren Knight.

Brendon, sponsored by Bridgwater and Taunton College, played Tor’s Thorns in the third division winning 36-23.

Brendon began with a flying start. With Jess and Zoe making their senior netball debuts, they were not fazed by what was to come. With a great defence and interceptions in the circle, Brendon took an early lead of 10-6. With a few swaps within Thorns, Brendon kept the pressure and it was goal-for-goal in the second quarter which Thorns ended ahead 15-16. Thorns upped their game at this point, bringing on two new players. However, Brendon kept their heads in the game, ensuring passes were accurate and keeping possession. Despite injuries from both teams, Brendon was once again in the lead (28-20). Keeping their confidence in the last quarter, Brendon ended with another win. POM was Zoe Godber-Ford on her senior debut.
