Quantock win and Blackdown draw at weekend

QUANTOCK sponsored by Mecca Bingo, hosted Purnell’s Harlequins in division 1. The opening exchanges were very tight, with the first quarter ending 11-9 in Quantock’s favour.

The second quarter saw lots of turnovers from both defensive units, but it was Quantock who were converting their chances and, by half time, had extended their lead to 18-12.

Going into the third quarter, both teams continued to apply real pressure in the oppositions’ circle, but Quantock were really pressing on with great transitions through the centre court to feed the shooters to extend their lead to ten goals. The final quarter saw Quantock really take control of the game, with the defence turning over the ball frequently and the shooters being deadly accurate, leading to a convincing 44-28 win.

POM was Lindsay Smith, OPOM was Denise Evely. The squad: GS Helen Lucas, GA Vicki Cornish, WA Kate Durbin, C Sophie Atyeo, WD Gugu Mlotshwa, GD Denise Evely, Lindsay Smith. Ball sponsor: Ling Shooting.

Blackdown, sponsored by Mortgage Select, travelled to play Sydenham’s Rubies in division 2. After a close encounter with Rubies previously, Blackdown knew they had to some out strong in the first quarter, which ended 8-8.

The second quarter saw some great attacking play, with GS Lucy Cox doing some quick pop passes to GA Sophie Bond, which were brilliantly converted. This quarter also saw great effort chasing balls and keeping them on court, earning Blackdown a 22-18 lead. Some more brilliant play from Blackdown in the third quarter, with GK Linda Holder gaining tips and the rest of the team working hard to bring the ball down the court to the shooters (30-30).

Blackdown held their nerve in the final quarter, with some fast and accurate feeds into the circle. It was a tense and nail biting quarter, which saw Blackdown and Rubies jostling to take the lead, with the ball going from end to end, but a final push from Blackdown saw them take the win 43-42. POM and OPOM was Lucy Cox. The squad: GS Lucy Cox, GA Sophie Bond, WA Sarah Hughes, C Louise Frost, WD Holly Gaskin, GD Sophia Valmiki, GK Linda Holder.

Also a huge well done to our TNC superstars who played at the Regional Schools Tournament: Tia Chaloner, Zoe Shadlock, Flora Collier, Freya Chandler, Brooke Whittaker, Lucy Beresford, Georgia-Bella Kingswell (all representing Taunton School), Lauren Knight and Lottie Hanrahan (representing Richard Huish College).
