Gary Kayser looking forward to his year at T&P

GARY Kayser the incoming Senior Captain at Taunton & Pickeridge Golf Club is very much looking forward to taking up his role after the Seniors’ EGM on March 8th.

He first got interested in golf back in West London when he was10, not playing but retrieving the golf balls from the River Brent that ran through both the Brent Valley and West Middlesex Golf Courses.

The incoming captain didn’t start to play though until his early 40s when he regularly linked up with friends to make up a four ball and play a variety of courses near Harrow where he then lived

After retiring from the printing industry Kayser moved to Somerset with his wife Janet in 2009 and joined Taunton & Pickeridge the following year.

“I very much enjoyed the seniors roll ups and got to know a lot of people and made many great friends who I still play with.

“I live fairly close to T&P so there wasn’t any debate which club to join. It’s a great course to play and always kept in great shape by the ground staff. Undoubtedly we have the best 19th hole in the county and the elevated view from the clubhouse terrace looking over the golf course to the Somerset Levels is amazing.”

Over the past year in addition to being Seniors Vice Captain Kayser has been the Seniors Competition Secretary.

“Despite Covid restrictions we managed to play eight of our ‘major’ senior comps with nearly 600 entrants in total. I hope we can replicate that enthusiasm for Senior Golf this summer. I also hope at some point that we can resume our inter club fixtures with some of the other clubs in our area.”

Nearly half of T&Ps 720 membership are male senior golfers and nearly 200 of those are active within the section.

“I firmly believe that a strong and enthusiastic Senior Section is the backbone of all golf clubs. It is generally only us old fools that play out in all weathers in the winter months and keep the clubhouse going. With the help of my incoming Vice Captain, Martin Hill, I will endeavour to do my best to keep the Senior Section of this club thriving!”
