Taunton six points clear despite defeat at Merthyr

SOUTHERN Premier South leaders Taunton Town suffered a 3-1 defeat away to fifth-placed Merthyr Town this afternoon (Tues).

However, the Somerset side's lead at the top has only been reduced by one point to six because second-placed Weymouth dropped points in a 2-2 draw at home to Poole.
Taunton appeared to be playing half-decently until the 36th minute when their goalkeeper Mike Davies brought down Tom Meechan and Ian Traylor stepped up to score from the penalty spot.
They conceded another goal three minutes into injury time when former Welsh Under 21 striker Owain Jones turned in a cross by Ryan Prosser.
With much to do in the second half to salvage at least a point, Taunton fell further behind in the 64th minute with Jones netting his second of the match.
The Welsh side looked well in command at this stage but Ed Palmer gave Taunton a glimmer of hope by pulling a goal back with a trademark free-kick.
However, Merthyr did not concede again and deservedly took all three points to boost their chances of making the play-offs.
