Somerset duo playing for Holland out in Oman

SOMERSET players Roelof van der Merwe and Paul van Meekeren are currently with the Dutch cricket team in Oman where they are taking part in a Quadrangular T20 series.

Before he flew out to join the rest of the Dutch team Paul said: “We are playing in the Oman Quadrangular Series which involves Ireland, Scotland, Oman and ourselves. We will be playing against each of the other teams after which the Dutch boys who are involved with their counties will be flying back to join their teams in England, while the others fly off to Chennai for a couple of 50 over matches.

“The games out in Oman are all T20 Internationals and are the only real opportunity for us all to play this format before the T20 qualifiers in October, which is still quite a long way off.”

Paul talked about how his winter training has been going.

“The winter has gone well for me and I have been working hard, putting in a lot of hours in the nets and in the gym getting ready for the summer.

“I have been involved with some community events, one of which was helping to launch the new Super1s in Taunton last week which was amazing and great fun.

“I love being involved in these sorts of events. Everyone looks up to professional cricketers so its great to be able to give something back to the community, to hopefully inspire people. I also enjoy it very much as well- I am probably the biggest kid around so really like that side of things.”

Holland play the first of their three T20 games this week when they face Scotland on February 13th, followed by Oman on February 15th and Ireland on February 17th- all games starting at 5.15am.
