Somerset youngster scores century for England Young Lions

THE four young Somerset cricketers, Kasey Aldridge, Lewis Goldsworthy, Tom Lammonby and Will Smeed, who have just spent 20 days in Bangalore attending a Young Lions training camp arrived back home just in time to spend Christmas with their families.

Goldsworthy who hails from Cornwall and celebrates his 18th birthday on January 8th saved his best until the last match of the training camp and in the three-day match against Karnataka State Under 23s the right handed batsman/ slow left arm bowler scored 100 before retiring with a tight hamstring.

The all rounder who attends Millfield School graduated onto the Academy at Somerset County Cricket Club after being the first from Cornwall to be part of the Potential Somerset Player Programme.

Steve Snell, the Director of the Somerset Academy was travelling with the England Young Lions as the fielding coach so was on hand to watch the young Cornishman’s innings in Bangalore.

Snell said: “It was a well compiled innings. Lewis played very well and was very fluent, scoring runs off both feet. He was very skillful against spin bowling and it was great for him to make a contribution in his only innings of the tour.

Talking about the other Somerset players in the Young Lions squad, Steve said: “All of the Somerset players represented themselves extremely well. We started to see Kasey Aldridge bowl with real pace, Will Smeed showed his boundary hitting capability and Tom Lammonby showed his leadership skills and demonstrated some real subtlety and craft with the bat.”

Snell added: “I think that there was a real significant improvement in all of the Somerset players which I am sure that they will take forward into all of their games looking towards the 2019 season.”

The Somerset youngsters will be hoping that they have done enough on the training camp to earn a place on the Young Lions tour to Bangladesh in the new year during which they will play matches in all formats.
